Watching the Mercito Gesta-Ty Barnett fight from ringside, it was obvious that ‘No Mercy’was either having difficulties early or simply trying to take his time against his taller opponent. Gesta would face Barnett at the Texas Station in Las Vegas on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights and even though he scored a knockout, it didn’t come easily.
In the early rounds Gesta was missing with some of his shots and he even was caught a few times by some nice right hands from his opponent. What helped Gesta was when he stopped headhunting and decided to use the jab.
Gesta rocked Barnett in the 5th round and after that he was in complete control. Mercito turned up the pressure in round 9, dropping Barnett with a vicious barrage of punches, as he pounced on him to score another knockdown that ended the fight.
24 years old Gesta remains undefeated and he wants a title shot next. We followed him to his dressing room after the bout and he called out one opponent who was a surprise to hear. Adrien Broner. The flashy former champ from Cincinnati would surely make for an interesting fight but it remains to be seen what direction Gesta’s promoter Bob Arum will take him next.
