The sport of boxing has seen many promotions come and go and TMT could follow that course; but it is doubtful for these reasons. The start up cash and star power that 50 cent and Floyd Mayweather have will at least assure us the potential staying power these two have. Floyd Mayweather is the undisputed box office king right now and with 50 cent getting a promotional license you can expect TMT to initially make quite a bit of dollars as Mayweather is a guaranteed 1 million PPV buys a fight. The fighters reportedly under contract with TMT are Celestino Caballero, Zab Judah, Andre Berto, Yuriokas Gamboa and Andre Dirrell. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
The goal of TMT promotions according to 50 cent is to stack the fight cards with high profile fights like the UFC. That is a good sign in what can be described as a sign that boxing is moving in the right direction when promoters think about what is best for the fans and the sport. Many promoters are in a position where they have all the cards so they do not have to change the way they do business (such as Top Rank and Golden Boy). What boxing needs is something fresh and new. What boxing needs is a boxing fan with money, which is what 50 cent is. What 50 and Floyd have to understand is that they will have to work with the Golden Boy and Top Rank’s of the world. One thing they might have to find out is these promotions have their own agenda and they don’t always do the right thing when it comes to boxing. 50 and Money are two brash cocky individuals, and if negotiations for potential fights with these promoters don’t happen, expect to hear trash talk from these two. This is why I question their staying power.
Unless they can have someone take care of the negotiations, I don’t see too many people wanting to work with them. A guy that ran Floyd Mayweather promotions, Leonard Ellerbe, might be depended on for that role; however what I’m most curious about is why Floyd Mayweather promotions never received a license, something you would expect a guy like Ellerbe to be able to take care of. All these questions leave me wondering what the future holds for this promotion, but make no mistake about it; for the immediate future TMT is a player in the boxing world.
