Chisora Antics: You really didn’t see this coming?

Boxing News

The Boxing world is abuzz about the Saturday press conference brawl between Dereck Chisora and David Haye, and with good reason. The melee that ensued has cast yet another black eye on the sport, but my question is this, no one saw this coming?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Chisora, a controversial fighter who was already known for biting and kissing opponents on previous occasions, was a ticking time bomb all week in Germany. It started with the now famous “bitch slap” of Vitali Klitschko at the weigh-in and continued with the spitting incident at brother Wladimir prior to the fight. Obviously Chisora has no respect for the sport and is an incident waiting to happen. So, why is it such a surprise what occurred at the post fight press conference?

Cheers to Vitali and his camp for acting like the classy individuals that they are; the Klitschko brothers have never truly gotten the respect they deserve outside of Germany and Russia.

David Haye is no angel here either of course, and shares the blame for what transpired, but come on; I saw this coming from thousands of miles away.

Chisora threatening to give Haye “two slaps” at the beginning of the exchange should have been a strong indicator. When Chisora actually got up from his seat and walked through the crowd towards the former champ, all signs pointed to trouble. It appears that Haye landed the first punch, but I really can’t say that he didn’t feel threatened, because the sight of an off-his-rocker Chisora does and will install fear.

What will happen to both individuals will shake out in the coming days? Chisora has already been arrested by German police and is facing a possible suspension of his Boxing license. My only thought is that perhaps those running the press conference should have put down their beers for a moment and taken measures to ensure this didn’t happen in the first place. Chisora’s camp should have never let their fighter get up from his seat and venture into the crowd either.

If only all heavyweights were class acts like the Klitschko brothers, but they are not. There will always be circus side shows like Dereck Chisora and David Haye, but let’s hope the ring master keeps a little more control next time…..
